We awoke to a cold but beautiful day. It got down into the 20's on Tuesday morning. Clear and sunny. We got to Mount Airy about 10:30 AM. I had wanted breakfast at the
Snappy Lunch, but it ended before we got there. Had to settle for lunch, pork tenderloin sandwich for me and all meat hamburger for Cathy. They have two hamburgers, the original which contains bread and the all meat. They added the all meat hamburger after customers kidded about bread burgers. The all meat burgers didn't sell as well as the burger mixed with bread, so they now have both. Sales started to decline when new fast food breakfast places opened, so they came up with several biscuit breakfasts. The most popular is the pork tenderloin biscuit. The original Snappy Lunch opened in the same location in 1923. We wanted to go to the
Andy Griffith Playhouse and Museum, but it was closed for some work. This is also the museum for the Siamese Twins
Eng and Chang Bunker who lived in Mount Airy.
We drove 12 miles south on US52 to
Pilot Mountain (Mount Pilot in the TV show) and visited some antique stores. One was filled with gas station signs and equipment on two floors, but wasn't open. We then drove up to
Pilot Mountain State Park. We walked up to the top of the Small Pinnacle and stopped at all the look outs and took pictures of the view. The day was perfect, clear, 70 degrees and no wind.
We drove back to the Mayberry RV Park and noticed two rat terriers at the travel trailer next to our site. We stopped over and visied with them. They have a five year old female and a two year old male. They rescued the male who was running loose in southern Florida.
