Another perfect day, sunny and a high of 76 degrees. We went to Frank Llloyd Wright's desert home,
Taliesin West. It started out as a desert camp in 1938. His home in Wisconsin was named Taliesin, a Welch name. His wife was Welch. His doctor recomended that he go to a warmer climate in the winter for his health.Taliesin West is on the NE edge of Scottsdale. He had 25 apprentice architects that he was teaching. They payed $600 a year and had to work on his projects. The original house was a frame of rock and cement and wood. The roof and some of the side was enclosed with canvas. This provided light and helped make the enclosure more inhabitable. Over the years it grew to a total of 7 buildings. We took the 90 minute tour. In addition to the house there were two theaters and a cabaret dinner theater. It is still a school of architecture and has a dining hall, dorms and tents. The first year students have to stay in tents. It now costs $32,000/yr and they still have to work on projects.
We stopped by the
Scottsdale Fashion Square on the way back to the motor home. We went out to
Manuel's Mexican Restaurant in Tempe for dinner. When we got there we found out that they didn't have a liquor license, so we couldn't have Margaritas or beer. I had spinach burritos which were really good. Cathy had sea food burritos and Kathryn had Tortilla soup.
